How Often You Should Replace Your Gutters

18 April 2022

How often should you replace your gutters?

Look up at your gutters next time you’re walking around the outside of your home. Are they in good condition, or do you need to repair or replace your gutters? It might be hard to tell from a quick glance, but the length of time they’ve been up can help give you a clue. The question of how long they’ll last before needing a gutter replacement depends on several factors. Material, location, and storm damage all can impact the lifespan of your gutter system, as well as how well your existing gutters have been maintained.

If you’re not sure if you need gutter replacement, you can learn about the signals your gutters need replacement here.

Aluminum gutters

Standard aluminum gutters last about 20 years on average, given typical wear and tear. That’s assuming they’ve been well-maintained, with regular checks to remove any build up of debris like helicopter seeds, pine needles, or leaves! On your gutter inspection walk, check for any dents or bends in the gutters. Don’t forget to look at the seams too- debris can get stuck and start to form clogs.

Vinyl gutters

Vinyl gutters last 20 years in the best weather circumstances, with no harsh weather or season changes. They’re prone to become brittle in the heat and crack when it freezes, causing leaks.

Copper gutters

Copper gutters are long-lasting, with a lifespan up to around 50 years. That bright shine they start with does eventually develop a green patina, which looks beautiful but will corrode if other materials are used in the gutter replacement process.

Gutter maintenance

No matter what material ordinary gutters are, they require maintenance in order to last their full lifespan. Those seeds and leaves won’t clean themselves, and if left unchecked, they can cause damage. Clog free gutters can prevent damage and help you get the most out of your investment.
